I know I said this already on Facebook, but this is a really great video. Wonderful job, raven714 :-D
Ironically, I think people outside of Canada did more to celebrate the holiday than many Canadians did. Because of all the bodies discovered recently at residential schools (not to mention the reminders of this dark chapter in Canadian history), a lot of Canadians didn't want to celebrate Canada's birthday. Some Canadians chose to remember the children who died at residential schools, while other Canadians just chose to reflect on how Canada can do better.
Thank you, rusty_armour. I am glad you like the video.
Can you please tell me the details? Events from Canada usually do not make it to our news. There are Czechs here who do not understand why we are still celebrating the founding of the Czechoslovak Republic - when Czechoslovakia has not existed for years. I am sure that every nation has black chapters in its history that it is not proud of. There are also plenty of them in Czech history. But there are also many things we as a nation are proud of. We will now also celebrate the holidays. On Monday, the feast of the Slavic heralds - Saints Cyril and Methodius and on Tuesday, the Day of the Burning of Master Jan Hus.
It all has to do with how Canada used to mistreat Indigenous peoples -- and still does to some extent. For almost a hundred years, Indigenous children were taken from their families and forced to attend residential schools in an attempt to make them properly "Canadian" (i.e. white). These children were often treated cruelly and some died while trying running away. While this history is known to most Canadians, we were forced to confront it head-on when a large number of bodies were found recently on the sites of two former residential schools. A lot of Canadians are demanding that all former residential schools be examined in case there are other remains to be found. In any case, these discoveries have brought home just how horrible a practice this was and how many children suffered because of it. For this reason, a lot of Canadians didn't want to celebrate Canada Day this year, including me.
It's great that you've got two holidays coming up! May you have a happy Saints Cyril and Methodius Day and a happy Jan Hus Day! :-D
Thank you for the details, rusty_armour. You´re right, it´s horrible. I understand that this is not a chapter of history that one would be proud of. Thank you for the holiday wishes. On Monday, I want to watch a broadcast of the service from Velehrad. And on Tuesday I want to watch Youtube if I can find the film Jan Hus there.
A fun video, raven714, though I don't like all the publicity shots for game hunting. I noticed the two cute cats fishing!
I forgot Canada Day, yet again! It seems like the last one was only the other day.
I remember watching a film about the residential schools. I was shocked because I've always thought of Canadians as such good people. Rather naive, I know. I am of course, as a white South African, not in a position to criticize any other nation.
You´re welcome, grondfic. I'm glad I cheered you up with the video. I also needed to cheer up a little. I used my old RoS / Canada pictures and pictures of characters from the game Yoworld. As you may have guessed, they were supposed to represent Guy and Robin of Loxley. Unfortunately, the video is still unresolved. I somehow managed to smuggle this. But I also wanted to share a video that I made for J.´s birthday. I couldn't upload that. I really don't know why one worked out and the other didn't.
