I'm so sorry to hear that you lost what you wrote! That has to be extremely horrifying and frustrating! :-( I think you're smart to focus on universe building. Who knows? It might provide you with even more ideas and make your story that much richer when you go back and start writing it again. BTW, I'll often send Word files to myself using email because I always have a fear that I might lose something on my hard drive. I created a folder on Yahoo and keep story drafts in there. However, you could use any kind of online storage system as back up.
I have to confess that I know almost nothing about Game of Thrones, but I would think (based on what little knowledge I do have) that Game of Thrones would cross nicely with RoS and Harry Potter. It could be really cool if someone from the House of Stark was one of the founders of the Greenwood School. Again, it makes both your universe and story richer and probably gives you even more to play with. I say go for it! :-)
OH! I just thought of something! I know someone who is a big fan of both RoS and Game of Thrones. If you'd like, I could ask her if she'd mind hearing about your ideas. I believe she's actually commented on your LJ before, so I know she's already a fan of your artwork. :-)
Please feel free to send me a private message on LJ if you'd like to brainstorm about your story or just need to talk. I hope you work through this period of depression. You've probably already worked this out, but I find that keeping busy helps a LOT. Distractions (especially creative ones) can really make a difference.
